Why Smuggler Dogs?

When I started writing Smuggler Dogs, I wanted to tell a story about bravery, loyalty, and friendship—values I only truly began to understand after my first dog, Charlie, came into my life, with Beau joining us a couple of years later.  Watching them live their lives, I started to think about what those values really mean, and how animals, like people, show incredible courage and loyalty every day.

Growing up, my family had cats, but no dogs—and certainly no other animals.  It wasn’t until after my husband passed away that I adopted Charlie, a rescue dog who, in many ways, ended up rescuing me.  Watching him, and later Beau, I began to see how loyalty and courage can show up in ways you least expect.

The dogs in my book face danger and tough choices, but they always look out for each other.  It’s a reminder that real courage isn’t just about fighting fear but standing by the ones you care about.

The book is set in Old France, a time when life was hard, and smuggling was the only way for many to survive.  The dogs who helped carry goods through dangerous situations showed incredible loyalty and bravery, just like the dogs in my story.

At its heart, Smuggler Dogs is about finding strength in others and discovering the courage to do what’s right, even when it’s tough. I hope readers will feel that same courage, loyalty, and hope as they follow the dogs’ journey.
